The State Enterprise Authority has just announced that the new area code to be assigned to the region will be "948".

The North American Numbering Plan Authority applied for an updated code in 2019 as phone number confusions are ending in the region. It is estimated that the number will be completed by the end of 2021.

The area began following the 757 area code after it was created in 1996, when the area split from the 804 area code.

As part of the committee's relief plan, area code 948 will replace the existing area code 757. Existing phone numbers with 757 as the area code will not change.

The change will not affect a nine-month-old initiative by the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce and other organizations called "The 757."

The SCC held a series of public hearings in the district last year before agreeing to the hearing examiner's findings and when the phone numbers in the district would end.

What is happening now is the implementation of a 13-month program for the relocation of the region. According to the plan, there will be a six-month period when calls within the 757 number plan can be used with seven or 10 numbers. This is to make it easier to train people without having to enter the 948 code without affecting the calls.
